Tall deciduous trees make up the top layer of plant growth, and they compose a impenetrable forest canopy. Although the canopy may be impenetrable, however, it does allow sunlight to reach the forest floor. The second layer of plant growth includes small trees and species of trees that are naturally shorter. A third layer includes shrubs. Forest herbs, such as wildflowers and berries, make up a fourth layer. During the spring, before the deciduous trees leaf out, these herbs grow rapidly in order to take advantage of the sunlight. A fifth layer would include mosses and lichens that grow on tree trunks.
In this Northeast Asia biome, the trees are similar to the ones in the United States. Pine trees, spruce, oak, and ash trees grow in this biome as well as Manchurian elm, Manchurian walnut, Mongolian oak, and Daurian birch.
The Mongolian oak, and the Daurian birch tend to grow in drier areas. Variety of areas like where the Mongolian oak, and Daurian birch stand are very dry, but other areas are disposed to seasonal flooding. Forests there probably include woodland, grassland, and swamp components with closed canopy forest staying in the well drained but wetter sights. The bamboo plant, which grows in the area, has adapted to growing in the cleared areas of the forest, rather then the shady ground floor.

SOIL: The soil in the deciduous forests is quite fertile, since it is often enhanced with falling leaves, twigs, logs, and decomposed organisms.
